Abstract
This study investigates the impact of political uncertainty on the risk-taking of listed companies in China. Political uncertainty refers to the local official changes in the municipal-level city government, and political uncertainty is divided into three different types, i.e., (i) turnover of mayor; (ii) turnover of the secretary of Communist Party of China (CPC) municipal committee; (iii) turnovers of either mayor or CPC secretary, to see whether the impact of political uncertainty on corporate risk-taking is related to the type of official. Additionally, this study also investigates the moderating effect of state ownership ties. The sample frame for this study is from 2012-2024 covering 1470 non-financial listed companies in China.
