Abstract
From 1644 to 1735, the province of Sichuan underwent significant socio-economic, political, and demographic transformations, marking one of the most profound shifts in the early history of the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911). These dynamic changes laid a crucial foundation for the administrative division change of modern-day Sichuan. The study places particular emphasis on the role of socio-economic and political factors in shaping these transformations. From a geographical perspective, Sichuan’s complex and strategic terrain emerged as a key consideration in the formulation of Qing administrative policies. As a result, a cross-regional governance model known as “Quanya Jiaocuo” (interlocking like canine teeth) was implemented as a strategy to strengthen central authority over the remote and difficult-to-control frontier regions. In terms of methodology, the study adopts a comprehensive documentary analysis approach, drawing extensively on a wide array of authoritative historical sources, including demographic data, socio-economic records, official documents, local histories, and archival materials from the Qing era. The findings reveal that rebellions along the frontier zones were a primary trigger of political instability, which ultimately compelled the Qing administration to reconfigure regional boundaries in pursuit of long-term security and stability. Thus, the study not only enriches scholarly understanding of Qing administrative strategies but also contributes meaningfully to the historical discourse on the evolution of Sichuan within the broader context of early modern Chinese governance.
