Abstract
This mixed-methods study explores the beliefs and practices of untrained Orang Asli preschool teachers (n=12) regarding English language teaching for Orang Asli preschoolers in five NGO-run preschools (will be referred to as NGO X and NGO Y) in Perak, Malaysia. By integrating quantitative data from questionnaires and classroom observations with qualitative insights from focus group discussions, the findings reveal a strong consensus among teachers on the importance of early English education for academic and career opportunities. However, challenges such as limited English proficiency, inadequate resources, and communication barriers hinder effective teaching. Teachers employ both traditional methods (e.g., repetitive drills) and interactive strategies (e.g., games, songs), yet discrepancies between their beliefs and practices arise: despite valuing interactive approaches, classroom observations showed inconsistent implementation due to low confidence and insufficient training.
