Abstract

Bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) is a promising semiconductor with a narrow band gap (~2.7–2.9 eV), making it an attractive photocatalyst for various applications. However, its practical use is limited by low surface area, high electron-hole recombination rate, restricted visible light absorption, and difficulty in reuse. This study addresses these issues by developing BiOBr-based composite systems with enhanced photocatalytic performance for the treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater, using ciprofloxacin (CIP) as a model contaminant. A sustainable BiOBr-biochar composite (BBC) was synthesized via a solvent-free hydrothermal method using biochar derived from palm oil mill effluent sludge (POMES) as a support matrix.
