Abstract

The israeli-palestinian conflict, one of the most enduring and violent in modern history, began in 1947 and intensified with the 1967 war. This led to israel’s occupation of gaza, the west bank, and east jerusalem. The conflict centers on disputes over borders, jerusalem’s status, israeli settlements, and palestinian refugees’ right to return. Both groups claim the same land. This study explores the feasibility of a two-state solution through an inclusive peace-building approach, identifying challenges and opportunities, analyzing reactions from israeli and palestinian leaders and civil society, and examining views on international community stances. Employing a qualitative methodology with a desk review and interviews with palestinian and israeli civil society leaders and conflict experts, the study finds that the conflict is rooted in the 1948 occupation, israel’s 1967 rejection of palestinian statehood, and ongoing west bank settlements. Palestinians demand freedom, dignity, self-determination, and an end to settlements, while israelis seek security, land ownership, state legitimacy, a unified jerusalem, new palestinian leadership, a demilitarized palestinian state, and respect for arab minority rights. The two-state solution faces obstacles, including mutual resistance, insufficient international pressure on israel, the gaza conflict, and continued settlement expansion
