Abstract
In recent years, there has been a growing enthusiasm for english learning in china. Chinese parents are sending their preschool-aged children to language institutions early to learn english. However, with the recent policy changes in china restricting english language instruction from being held outside of the home for preschoolers, it remains to be seen how eager chinese parents supplement their preschool children’s english learning at home. Using the home literacy model, this study aims to examine the influence of parental beliefs on preschoolers’ english learning attitudes through various home learning environments. A mixed-method design was employed, with 405 parents of preschoolers aged 3 to 6 completing an online questionnaire, followed by interviews with eight preschool-aged children. The quantitative phase found that parental beliefs significantly influenced both formal and informal english learning, as well as the availability of english learning resources. Additionally, the home literacy environment positively impacted preschoolers’ cognitive, affective, and behavioral attitudes towards english. In the qualitative phase, the findings highlighted that preschoolers preferred interactive and engaging methods such as role-play and music, which elicited positive emotional responses.
