Abstract

Wèi-jìn xuánxué, also known as neo-daoism or metaphysical learning school, is the prevailing philosophical school during the wèi-jìn dynasties (220-420 ad), represents a significant aspect of chinese philosophical history. The political upheavals and societal transformations of that era compelled intellectuals to seek spiritual solace in the realm of profound and detached contemplation. They centered their discussions around three classical texts: the zhōuyì (book of changes), the dào dé jīng, and the zhuāngzǐ. By continually absorbing and expanding upon daoist concepts of “dào,” they formulated the core theme, rooted in the thoughts of lǎozǐ and zhuāngzǐ, to explore the ultimate philosophical principles of the universe and human life, and the relationship between humans and all things. Among the intellectuals, guō xiàng, a prominent philosopher in the wèi-jìn period, represented the pinnacle of wèi-jìn xuánxué with his work zhuāngzǐ zhù (commentary to the zhuāngzǐ). In examining guō xiàng’s philosophical concepts of “yŏu wú” (being and non-being) and “nèi shèng wài wáng” (inward sage and outward king), this thesis sets forth four primary research objectives
