Abstract
Cost overruns are a significant issue in the construction industry, particularly in petrochemical projects. Understanding the critical reasons behind cost overruns and their impact is challenging. While many studies have explored cost overruns in construction, focusing on their causes and implications, there's a noticeable gap in research that specifically targets identifying these causes in petrochemical projects. Additionally, there's a need for predictive models that can estimate the likelihood of cost overruns in these projects. This study aims to address this gap by identifying the factors that lead to cost overruns in iran's petrochemical projects and developing a model to predict cost overrun levels. The study uses quantitative (based on numbers) and qualitative (based on observations) research methods to thoroughly investigate the factors influencing cost overruns and develop a predictive model for the severity of cost overruns in iran's petrochemical projects. Data was collected through interviews and surveys. The survey was designed based on findings from literature reviews and initial interviews, leading to the identification of 30 risk factors. Data was collected from 99 participants using a survey that assessed the cause-and-effect relationship of risk factors to cost overruns in iran's petrochemical projects.
