Abstract

Juvenile oysters of the species Crassostrea iredalei were cultured in two different experiments namely Experiment I; Effects of different sources of diet on the growth and the survival of the juvenile oysters Crassostrea iredalei. Experiment II; Effects of different culture systems on the growth and survival of the juvenile oysters Crassostrea iredalei. In experiment I, the juvenile oysters were supplied with different sources of phytoplankton (wild phytoplankton and cultured phytoplankton) where the juvenile oysters were cultured using upwelling system for 45 weeks. The survival of the juvenile oysters supplied by cultured phytoplankton (32.33 ± 4.11 %) is lower compared to wild phytoplankton sources (55.46 ± 4.25 %). Juvenile oyster fed with both phytoplankton sources showed a positive growth but towards the end of the study cultured phytoplankton show higher growth compared wild phytoplankton.
