Abstract

In recent years, pharmaceutical expenditure has grown faster than many of the other components of healthcare spending. Globally, pressure to manage pharmaceutical spending has led governments and non-governmental health organizations to promote the use of generic drugs. In 2012, Malaysia’s out-of-pocket (OOP) expenditure on healthcare was 79% of private sector spending and it was twice the high income countries out-of-pocket payments (OOPPs), which average at 37% of private sector expenses. To bring down the OOPPs and reduce financial burden on patients in private healthcare sector, it is highly recommended to promote the use of generics.
