Abstract
Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is used as a bioelectrochemical system that converts organic waste, such as dewatered sludge and fruit waste, into electricity using engineered sulfonated polymeric membranes to enhance proton transfer and overall performance.The fabrication of advanced heterogenous sulfonated polymeric membranes for MFCs is the most potential topic at present to address the issue of substrate and microbe’s crossover, low proton transfer rates and higher internal resistance in the MFCs operation. In the present work, heterogenous sulfonated polysulfone crosslinked with sulfonated chitosan (SPSf/SCS) was utilized as proton exchange membrane in MFCs. The physical, chemical and electrochemical characterization of SPSf membrane with different immersion time in sulfonating agents were investigated as a screening procedure. The most well-performed SPSf was utilized as sulfonated polymer base to crosslink with sulfonated chitosan. Different formulations of SPSf/SCS were designed; namely SPSf/SCS-0.5 wt%, SPSf/SCS-0.75 wt% and SPSf/SCS-1 wt% and comprehensive physical, chemical, and electrochemical characterization was compared with the commercialized membrane Nafion 212.
