    Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the effects of particle pre-treatment on the properties of particleboard made from oil palm trunk particles by evaluating the physical, mechanical and biological durability properties. A total of nine types oil palm trunk particleboards were manufactured from different particles treatment (untreated, hot water and NaOH) with different preservative addition (0.06% and 0.1%) at a target density of 0.65 g/cm3, pressed at 150°C for 10 minutes. Urea formaldehyde (UF) was used as the binder. Bending strength, internal bonding (IB) strength, thickness swelling, water absorption, fungal decay, termite decay and soil burial of the particleboards were analyzed. Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was used to detect the presence of functional groups that exists in the manufactured particleboards. The decomposition and thermal performance of the boards were evaluated by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA).
