Abstract

Writing is vital to success in academic fields. Students face many challenges learning how to write in a foreign language. The effect of cognitive factors on EFL university students’ writing performance is investigated in this study. The respondents are Jo rdanian bachelor’s degree students at the Department of English Language and Literature at Mu’tah University in Jordan. The study used a mixed - method approach. Data was collected through qualitative and quantitative methods with a purposive sampling procedure.Four research instruments were used to answer the research questions. They are: EFL essay writing, writing strategies questionnaire, working memory span task, and semi-structured interviews. The researcher has adopted and adapted the concepts of two distinguished theoretical perspectives that are proposed by scholars in teaching writing in English as a foreign language. Hayes and Flower’s (1980/1996) writing model was mainly used as the theoretical basis in the theoretical framework of the study. The findings of the study concluded that most of the investigated variables, i.e., working memory capacity, writing ability, and the use of writing strategies showed significant results. However, the relationship between composing as a writing strategy and stude nts’ writing performance is not significant. The relationship between complexity and planning on one hand, and accuracy and writing difficulties on the other hand is not significant. Recommendations were presented to EFL material writers and textbook designers to include the effect of cognitive factors on writing performance in teaching writing in an EFL context. Further research can be directed to writing teachers and learners.
