Abstract
Xi You Ji is a Chinese literary canon which enjoys popularity worldwide. Given the important role played by the overseas spread of fictions in cultural transmission, there is a need to identify the transformation of XYJ’s images in the English-speaking world, determining the changes in the reception of XYJ by Western readers, and establishing the way human and non-human actors function in the translation, introduction and dissemination of XYJ in the literary field. This thesis presents a novel hybrid methodology integrating paratext theory and sociological theories via paratexts. This study selects 11 English versions of XYJ. The criteria for inclusion are independent books that are physically or digitally obtainable, cover a long time span, are published by different types of publishers and enjoy high popularity worldwide
