Abstract
Performance measurement is prevalent in the research and teaching system amongst Malaysian public universities. Traditionally, performance measurement in universities has had a developmental role—helping academics to improve their future performance. However, the new performance measurement practices adopted by one of the public universities in Malaysia seem to be more judgmental, formal, and quantified – i.e., seeking to evaluate past performance quantitatively. This study aims to explore how two schools at the public university strike a balance between social and commercial objectives (hybrid organisation). In this study, the institutional logics perspective is used as an analytical lens to probe the influence of institutional logics on the pressures confronting schools’ management in sustaining dual missions.
