Abstract
Household debt is a tool to stimulate economic growth, enhance financialization, eradicate poverty, and reduce income distribution gaps. However, with the liberalization of financial markets, debt started to rise steadily. This trend accelerated and lead to global financial crisis of 2008. Experts and international organizations have observed a dramatic increase in household debt levels in the developing countries, signalling that household debt in these countries has already reached the optimum level that can hinder future economic growth. Given the changes in the economic landscape and simultaneously the austerity, households are tempted to use credit to smooth or maintain their consumption. Hence, this study aims to investigate the factors determining household debt by examining social reproduction, social class and price by utilized annual data from developing countries using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) estimation.
