Abstract

The pharmaceutical industry bears increasing environmental and social responsibilities but lags in sustainable development due to its conservative nature. As green supply chain integration becomes key to sustainability, this thesis examines how and when green internal integration, green supplier integration, and green customer integration influence economic, social, and environmental performance. Drawing on the natural resource-based view (NRBV), dynamic capabilities theory (DCT), and contingency theory (CT), data were collected from 289 Chinese pharmaceutical firms. Using SEM and PROCESS, 32 hypotheses were tested, with 21 supported and 11 not supported. Results show that green internal integration promotes both green supplier and customer integration. All three integration dimensions positively affect supply chain agility, which in turn improves all aspects of sustainable performance. Supply chain agility also mediates these relationships. Digital orientation shows limited moderating effects, but it strengthens the indirect influence of green supplier integration on environmental and social outcomes. These findings clarify the mechanisms linking green integration and sustainability, and highlight the conditional role of digital orientation.
