Abstract

Previous research on land use and river channel morphology in Northern Nigeria has largely emphasized urbanization while neglecting the influence of various land use types on channel adjustments. Moreover, limited understanding of the rate, magnitude, and drivers of land use-induced channel changes, stemming from complex biophysical and socio-economic interactions across different scales and variable river responses, creates uncertainty in potential channel adjustments. This underscores the need for accurate predictions to support effective policy and sustainable land management. This study analyzed the effects of land use changes on channel morphology in the Ginzo watershed from 1980 to 2020. The objectives were to investigate land use changes, assess changes in stream channel morphology, examine the impact of land use change on stream channel morphology, and develop a predictive model of the response of stream channel morphology to land use change.
