Abstract

As an important component of corporate governance mechanism, equity incentives can alleviate the agency conflicts between shareholders and managers which are caused by the separation of ownership and control. Since the official implementation of equity incentives in China started in 2006, there has been a rapid growth in the number of listed companies adopting equity incentives. However, it has been a debatable topic whether equity incentives can improve corporate performance, and whether the specific equity incentive contract terms can better promote corporate performance. Therefore, the necessary of systematically examining the effects of equity incentives is highlighted. In addition to examine the effect of the implementation of equity incentives on the corporate performance, the study also examines the effects of equity incentive contract terms, which include equity incentive modes, the range of equity incentive recipients and the proportion of equity incentives granted to key employees.
