Abstract
Understanding the interactions between land cover and hydroclimatic processes is essential for effective flood risk management and climate adaptations, especially in data-scarce tropical basins like the Kelantan River Basin (KRB) in Malaysia. This study aims to improve the applicability of the European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) land cover product for hydroclimatic impact assessment by integrating multiple open-source land cover datasets and examining their relationship with climate variables. The study was conducted in three phases. First, the ESA CCI land cover maps were harmonized and merged with suitable Copernicus Global Land Service (CGLS), The Global Land Surface Satellite global land cover (GLASSLC), Finer Resolution Observation and Monitoring of Global Land Cover (FROM-GLC) and ESRI2020 data through spatial reclassification and accuracy assessment to generate an improved land cover product tailored for KRB where the data is used for land cover change assessment for the region. Secondly, a rapid flood inundation mapping model was developed using Sentinel-1 SAR data on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform to detect floodaffected areas during selected monsoonal events. Third, statistical analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between land cover changes and climatic
