Abstract

Business sustainability emphasises corporate responsibility within the framework of the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) agenda, which is essential for the long-term sustainability of both companies and the broader economy. The Upper Echelons Theory suggests that organisational outcomes are shaped by the value and cognitive bases of its powerful actors. As the primary decision-maker, the CEO wields considerable influence over the company’s decisions. This study takes a comprehensive approach to enhance the Upper Echelons Theory by integrating the CEO power framework with the managerial risk-taking framework to examine how ESG outcomes are influenced by CEO power and risk-taking propensity.
