Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the istem-edp module on collaboration, problem-solving, and stem attitudes among fifth graders in chinese primary schools. The study applied the theories of piaget’s cognitive developmental theory, vygotsky’s social development theory, bandura’s social learning theory, and the framework for k-12 quality engineering education. The istem-edp module was developed based on the chinese new science curriculum standard and textbook according to the addie instructional design model. The study employed a nonequivalent control group, pretest-posttest experimental design. One fifth-grade class (treatment group) took a 6-week istem-edp module, while another class (control group) took science classes as normal. There were 60 students in each group, with equal numbers of girls and boys. The data was collected from pretest and posttest via three likert scales for each group and analysed by ibm spss statistics version 26. The one-way manova results revealed that the istem-edp module had significant positive effects on fifth graders’ collaboration, problem-solving, and stem attitudes. In addition, the study also found that the istem-edp module promoted gender equality in collaboration and problem-solving but exacerbated the gender gap in stem career interest of stem attitudes.
