Abstract
Ceo backgrounds represent an important strategic resource that can shape the innovative capacity of firms, particularly in dynamic and competitive markets. In the context of china, the influence of ceo backgrounds on corporate innovation has received relatively limited scholarly attention, despite the country’s emphasis on innovation-driven growth. This study, grounded in resource-based theory, investigates ceo backgrounds affect the innovation of listed firms in china from 2010 to 2022. Furthermore, drawing on managerial power theory, it examines whether ceo power moderates the impact of ceo backgrounds on innovation of listed firms in china. The empirical analysis is based on a panel dataset comprising 19,137 firm-year observations from 3,199 listed firms in china over the period 2010–2022. Corporate innovation is measured by r&d intensity and r&d expenditures, ceo backgrounds are proxied by ceos’ foreign experience, academic experience, and education level, and ceo power is represented by ceo duality and ceo tenure. Statistical diagnostics, including the poolability test, breusch–pagan lm test, and hausman test, confirm the fixed effect model as the most suitable estimation approach. To address potential dynamic endogeneity, a dynamic panel two-step system gmm regression is employed.
