Abstract
Stimulating key economic performance indicators has long been a major focus of economic literature, with investment viewed as a key driver of growth and development. Special economic zones (sezs) have emerged as strategic policy tools designed to attract investment, boost exports, and generate employment. In jordan, policymakers have widely promoted sezs as success stories and cornerstones of national economic transformation. However, the actual impact of these zones on macroeconomic performance remains empirically uncertain, calling for a careful evaluation. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of sezs in jordan through three main objectives: (i) to assess the impact of special economic zones (sezs) on jordan’s economic growth, (ii) to evaluate the influence of special economic zones (sez) on foreign direct investment (fdi) inflows to jordan, (iii) to evaluate the relationship between special economic zones (sez) and jordan’s trade balance. The study uses annual time series data spanning 1975 to 2023 and applies autoregressive distributed difference (ardl) modeling to estimate short- and long-run relationships. Sez types free zones, development zones, and industrial zones are represented by dummy variables across three econometric models.
