Abstract
Sustainable ecotourism is a widely recognised strategy for ensuring the long-term viability of tourism destinations. Various approaches have been employed to achieve sustainable ecotourism development, often focusing on physical infrastructure and conservation efforts. However, the emergence of tourism routes and trails as a strategic tool for sustainable tourism development has gained increasing attention. Research has demonstrated that well-planned tourism routes not only enhance visitor experiences but also distribute tourism benefits equitably, reduce environmental degradation, and strengthen community involvement. Despite this growing recognition, a comprehensive and structured framework for the development of sustainable ecotourism routes and trails remains absent. This study adopts a qualitative approach, employing in-depth interviews with key stakeholders in langkawi islands to identify essential components for a sustainable ecotourism routes and trails framework. The findings reveal five fundamental components: ecological sensitivity assessment (esa), community engagement and participation, visitor education and interpretation, infrastructure and facilities planning, and monitoring and enforcement.
