Abstract

This qualitative case study explored the impact of multimodal feedback on esl students' narrative writing skills within a malaysian open learning context. The research aimed to assess the efficacy of multimodal feedback methods in improving writing abilities and to examine the role of the community of inquiry (coi) in online learning environments. The study utilised a thorough methodology for fourteen weeks, which involved reviewing records and conducting interviews to collect detailed data on student experiences and interactions. Findings revealed significant improvements in students' narrative writing abilities, particularly in content organisation, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. These enhancements were attributed to the interactive nature of the feedback, which fostered a supportive learning environment and encouraged critical discourse among students. The study highlighted the importance of social presence, as students reported feeling more connected and supported through their interactions, aligning with existing literature on the correlation between social presence and student satisfaction in online learning. A key contribution to this research was introducing a "humanistic learning presence" within the community of inquiry (coi) framework, emphasising the need for emotional and psychological support alongside academic learning.
