Abstract

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common health concern among pregnant women, particularly during the third trimester, and it significantly impacts their quality of life. This study aims to assess the knowledge and attitude regarding UI among pregnant women seeking treatment at Hospital Pakar Universiti Sains Malaysia (HPUSM), examine the correlation between knowledge and attitude, and explore the association between sociodemographic factors and knowledge levels. A cross-sectional study design was employed, involving 157 pregnant women selected through convenience sampling. The data was collected using a hard copy questionnaire distributed to the respondents. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire and statistically analysed using the SPSS software version 28.0. The study used descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and Chi-square. The study's findings revealed that 84 (53.5%) participants have a high knowledge of UI, and only 72 (45.9%) have a good attitude toward UI. Furthermore, there was a statistically significant positive relationship between the level of knowledge and attitudes (r = 0.341, p<0.01). There was no association between sociodemographic factors [age (p = 0.125), level of education (p = 0.901) and gravida (p = 0.555)] and the level of knowledge UI. Lastly, there was no association between sociodemographic factors [age (p = 0.358), level of education (p = 0.550) and gravida (p = 0.588)] and the level of attitude UI. The findings are expected to enhance awareness, encourage better health-seeking behaviour, and assist healthcare professionals in tailoring intervention and health education strategies during antenatal visits
