Abstract
Physical and psychological wellness of employees are crucial to their overall well-being. This is certainly important for oil and gas employees both offshore and onshore, who must maintain a healthy state of mind and body to handle the rigorous and often dangerous demands of the job. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 180 participants. An established questionnaire of Patient Health Questionnaires (PHQ-15) and Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS-21) were given to the participants that fit the inclusion criteria via an online platform. The general objective of this study is to study the somatic symptoms and psychological distress among oil and gas industry workers in the Federal Territory of Labuan. The data was analysed by descriptive statistics and the Chi-Square test using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 26.0. The majority of participants 77 (42.8%) have minimal symptom severity of somatic symptoms, whereas just 28 (15.6%) have a high symptom severity. The majority of participants had normal levels of psychological distress where depression 117 (65.0%), anxiety 105 (58.3%), and stress 146 (81.1%), whereas the least suffered extremely severe levels of psychological distress (depression 4 (2.2%), anxiety 15 (8.3%), and stress 1 (0.6%). The Chi-Square test revealed there is a statistically significant association between somatic symptoms and psychological distress of depression, stress and anxiety. Lastly, there is a statistically significant association between socio-demographic marital status with psychological distress.
