Abstract

In this study, the potency of eighty actinomycetes, isolated from mangrove sediment in states Perak and Kedah of Malaysia, were evaluated for production of antimicrobial and antioxidant metabolites. Five Streptomyces sp. that demonstrated antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria in a preliminary screening were cultivated in ISP1 (International Streptomyces Project 1) broth and extracted using ethyl acetate at a ratio of 1:1 (v/v). Five active isolates were titled as MBL 159, MBL 161, MBL 169, MBL 185 and MBL 201. Ethyl acetate extract of MBL169 with accession number (KU663071) expressed the highest antimicrobial activity on the disc diffusion method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test.
