Abstract

Colours play an important role in the human life for ages. It is said that in the absence of colours, a culture or a society will lose its vitality. This study is more focused on the significance of colours in the Malay kingdom based on, more specifically, three editions of the classical literary work, Sulalat Al Salatin. Most studies on the Malay history manuscripts are more centred on the cultural and ceremonial aspects. However, studies on colours are an unfamiliar topic and often deemed to be an isolated entity from the original text. If there is any, most of them are focused on the features of the attire and accessories minus any elaborate commentary on colours in the Malay kingdom and other various perspectives. This is illustrated in the works of Siti Zainon Ismail, Raja Masittah, Asmah Haji Omar, Syed Ahmad Jamal, Nawawee Muhammad and others. Thus, this study attempts to unveil the significance of colours in the Malay kingdom from, specifically, the perspectives of the historical manuscript, Sulalat Al Salatin.
