Fungsi-fungsi pekerja asuhan di rumah kanak-kanak di Pulau Pinang.
Masters thesis, Universiti Sains Malaysia.
Abstract
The family is the most basic unit in a child's life because it helps them to fulfil their physical, social, emotional and intellectual needs. However, families with problems of poverty, child abuse or absence of a caregiver are not able to play the role effectively. It needs help from other social institutions. In this regard, children's home is one of the social institutions that can take over the responsibilities of the family for a temporary period. At the children's home, child care workers carry out functions which can help children to fulfil their needs for development. In Malaysia, however, this profession is not given full attention. There are no practice guidelines, qualification eligibility nor research conducted. The extent to which the care workers can carry out their functions effectively still remains unclear. This study was aimed at exploring functions and problems of the care workers based on the timetable set by the management. Thirteen care workers from five different children's homes in Penang were invited to participate in this study. Data were collected through interview with care workers.
