Abstract

A study was carried out to determine the effect of light intensity, water movement, water depth, initial stocking density and nutrient content (NH4+, NO3- and PO42-) on the growth, chlorophyll a concentration, dry weight and agar yield of the red macroalgae Gracilaria manilaensis. The study was conducted in an abandoned shrimp pond in Merbok, Kedah and in the laboratory of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) from June 2008 until June 2010. Results showed that the culture with low initial weight produced higher Relative Growth Rate (RGR) (200g>500g>1,000g). Chlorophyll a content showed a significant difference between 200g culture compared to 500 and 1,000g (200g>500g=1,000g). Dry weight for 500g and 200g culture were significantly high (500g=200g>1,000g) but both showed no significant differences for the agar yield (P>0.05).
