Lim Lian Geok and Aminuddin Baki are two prominent educationists who had played a significant role to safeguard the educational interests of their respective communities in the 1950s and early 1960s. The 1950s and early 1960s were two cruciol periods in the educational development of Malaysia, which involved the restructuring of the ethnic-based segregated school systems instituted by the British colonial government. This process of restructuring was to facilitate the transition from colonial rule to self government. It had a profound impact on the development of Chinese and Malay education as far as the roles of education as a tool for nation building and as a means of social mobility was concerned. It is against this backdrop that the roles of Lim Lian Geok and Aminuddin Baki had taken different trajectories underpinned by conflicting interests to safeguard the educational interests of their respective communities.
