The Transformation From Elitis To Mass Higher Education In Malaysia - Problems And Challenges

Abstract

The surging demand for higher education in Malaysia has led to the transformation from elitist to mass higher education. Several factors have, in one way or another, resulted in this changing higher education landscape. These factors include the democratization of secondary education, the restructuring of the economy, reduced number of students going abroad as a cansequence of the global recession of the mid-1980s and later the Asian financial crisis in 1997, and the emergence of a knowledge-based economy.
