Abstract

A simple method for the simultaneous determination of phenol and p-cresol as urinary metabolites from benzene exposure has been validated. The analytes were analysed after acid hydrolysis and extraction on solid-phase extraction (SPE) procedures using gas chromatography with flame ionization detection and a capillary collum. The phenols were well seperated within 7 minutes. Recovery was over 102% in the range of 3 to 100 ug/ml. The detection limit varies in the range of 0.1 -0.3 ug/ml The coefficient variation and accuracy was in the range of 18.0 - 27.2 % and 9.6 - 19.7 % respectively, at the middle to high point range of concentration studied.
